LENA is a digital recording system. Its recording devices were specially designed for young children to wear in a vest or t-shirt pocket. Each LENA device can record up to 16 hours at a time.
For our current study, we hand parents a box that has been personally packed for them. In it, there are LENA recording devices and a selection of vests and t-shirts to help their child wear the LENA device on three days, as the family is going about their normal routine. Parents can, of course, switch the device on and off as they please so that they can have a private conversation whenever they want.
Most of the recording is processed automatically by the LENA software on lab computers. However, we also transcribe some 5-minute segments of the recordings, when the child speaks a lot.
We have put together the most frequently asked questions about LENA to give you some more information about how it works.
If you are interested in participating in our study with your child, send us a message and a research assistant will get in touch with you within 24 hours.
